New column goes live

The folks over at MSDN asked me to author a series of articles based around the theme of the "Pragmatic Architecture" talk I've given in a couple of locales recently, and the first article ("Layering") has gone up, along with the introduction to the series. Feedback is, of course, welcome, through either blog comments or through more traditional channels.

By the way, here's an interesting challenge for those of you who think you're up for it--who are the two members of "the group" spotted by the author during the intro? (Yes, they are, in fact, real people. None of this "Any similarities to persons real or historical is strictly accidental" bull-pucky for me.)

Good article, Ted. Looking forward to the series. The layers over tiers argument got me thinking about Fowlers 1st Rule of Distributed Object Design:

"Don't distribute your objects."

Anyway... love that. Keep fighting the good fight.

nice work ... I agree totally, I hate being called an architect at work when its referred to as "enterprise" - I think generally very experienced developers (old school types) who have been around the block need a title besides senior developer get called architect - who knows, I for one don't create much documentation at all ;) and I only ever describe projects in layers .. I like to think I'm a newer generation architect - I just like to make sure its all going to work, screw the fancy names and enterprise terms. :)

Excellent piece on layering, Ted. We at GigaSpaces have been calling this "virtualized tiers," but I like your termniology better. It's clearer. I blogged about your piece here: http://gevaperry.typepad.com/main/

That is very interesting. Several companies have the enterprise architecture practice nowdays.
